T-Rex Autopsy Debut Album | Cygnus Atratus

T-Rex Autopsy’s debut Cygnus Atratus plays like a manifesto. A dense, restless collection of ideas welded together by precision and conviction. Hailing from the Blue Mountains and Western Sydney, the band call their sound “World Metal,” and it’s an accurate label. They fold Middle Eastern classical modes, North Indian rhythms, and cinematic ambience into progressive metal that hits as hard as it thinks.

The opener “Ibn Sina” sets the pace with sharp, polyrhythmic guitars and a melodic sense drawn from maqam traditions rather than Western scales. “Letters From Damascus,” nearly ten minutes long, shifts between meditative passages and intricate riff storms without losing focus. The oud, glissentar, and baglama aren’t novelty, they’re essential parts of the composition, woven into the texture instead of sitting on top of it.

Tracks “Crimson Feathers” and “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” balance weight and melody with clear intent. “Heavy Metal Awesome Sandwich” shows the band can slip humor into the chaos without breaking tone. The production, handled by Kosta Ana and mastered by Josh Adams, keeps every layer audible, from the acoustic resonance to the low end churn that grounds it all.

There are echoes of Opeth, Gojira, and Mr. Bungle, but T-Rex Autopsy don’t sound like anyone else. Their songs move with thought, not formula, and the record’s 71 minutes feel deliberate rather than indulgent. Cygnus Atratus is heavy in the truest sense, not just in volume, but in spirit. It’s the work of a band chasing something bigger than genre, and reaching it often enough to matter.
